The unusually shaped smartphone garnered 200,000 orders since its launch on Wednesday, according to CEO John Chen. The smartphone sold out in six hours on its own website, and sold out in 10 hours on Amazon, he said. Before it sold out, the Passport was the top unlocked smartphone on the e-tailer's site.</div>

The strong early start to the Passport is critical to company's efforts to turn itself around. It's the first flagship smartphone that BlackBerry has released this year, representative of the new tenure under Chen. The company is attempting to go after "power professionals" -- productivity-focused individuals who prefer a keyboard and focus on messaging and e-mails.</div>

The Passport is indicative of Chen's strategy shift toward more people who work in large corporations and government agencies that value security and messaging capabilities. AT&T has confirmed that it would sell the Passport, but hasn't provided a price or date of availability. The smartphone is already available unlocked for $599 in the US.<br />

One reason why the BlackBerry Passport sold out so quickly was because the company only provided a small initial order. Chen said a larger order would come next Wednesday.<br />

<b>Uber is pushing back against the latest legal challenge to its business, saying accusations against it and its competitors are inaccurate and need correcting.</b><br />

The district attorneys for San Francisco and Los Angeles sent letters this week to Uber, Lyft and Sidecar claiming they’ve engaged in unlawful business practices. The letters, based on a joint investigation by the attorneys’ offices, take aim at several issues, chiefly the companies’ policies around driver background checks.<br />

The checks don’t go far enough and aren’t as thorough as the companies claim, the district attorneys (DAs) allege. Sidecar, for instance, has misled consumers by saying it screens out drivers who have ever committed driving violations, sexual assaults and other offenses, according to its letter from the DAs, seen by IDG News Service. Similar letters were sent to Uber and Lyft, said a source with knowledge of the matter.<br />

Uber says the claims are false. “The district attorneys have made numerous inaccurate assertions that we will correct and discuss with them,” an Uber spokeswoman said. “Ridesharing is unequivocally supported by the California legislature, the California Public Utilities Commission, the governor, local jurisdictions across the state and millions of Californians,” she added.<br />

Lyft and Sidecar also said they would work with the district attorneys to address the issues. “Sidecar is strongly committed to safety for both riders and drivers,” the company said.<br />
<br />
Uber’s stated policies on background checks include county, federal and multi-state checks—but they only go back seven years, which is the maximum allowable under California law, the firm says on its website.<br />
<br />
The checks apparently haven’t stopped bad things from happening. In Orlando, an Uber driver was recently charged with battery after putting his hand inside a female passenger’s blouse, according to a local news report. And in Washington, D.C., an Uber rider this past summer says he was kidnapped by his driver, as reported in The Washington Post.<br />
<br />
The ride-sharing companies have faced legal challenges, caps on the number of cars they can operate and outright bans in many areas they operate. Uber’s legality in Germany has gone back and forth over unresolved questions of safety and insurance.<br />
<br />
In California, “We value innovation and new modes of providing service to the public; however, we need to make sure that the safety and well-being of consumers are adequately protected in the process,” said San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon on Friday.<br />
<br />
The district attorneys also say new services from all three firms that allow customers to car pool to split costs are illegal under California law, which forbids transportation companies from charging multiple people for the same ride. The California Public Utilities Commission has also challenged the services.<br />
<br />
San Francisco’s Gascon and LA District Attorney Jackie Lacey said in the letter they’d like to meet with the firms by Oct. 8. Barring that, their offices are prepared to take legal action including injunctive relief and civil penalties.</div>

Although Microsoft has marketed the Surface line of tablets as productivity devices, the Surface mini is powered by Windows RT, running on top of just 1GB of RAM. Those specs were provided by Neowin, which said it's actually held and tested as Surface mini—although Neowin's source forbade photographs.<br />
<br />
That would essentially make the Surface mini a device for consuming content—and in limited fashion, as there simply aren’t too many applications written specifically for Windows RT these days. Any available apps would have to run on that anemic 1GB of RAM, which is less than what you’ll find in some smartphones these days.<br />
<br />
The cut-down specs are also less powerful than what other tablet manufacturers announced earlier this year. At CES, for example, Asus announced the VivoTab Note 8, powered by an Atom processor, Windows 8.1, and 2GB of RAM, and costing about $250 online. Since then, however, the trend has been to use Intel’s Atom Z3735G processor on tablets like the Acer Iconia Tab 8W, which supports only 1GB of RAM. Although per-application performance may not suffer, there are sure to be limits on how many tabs or apps you can have open at any one time.<br />
<br />
The problem for hardware makers, however, is that even with Microsoft’s decision toeliminate licensing fees for sub-9-inch devices, Windows tablet makers face steep competition from Android tablet makers, who aren’t afraid to use inexpensive ARM processors to reduce prices further. <br />
<br />
Finally, there’s there the issue of demand. Lenovo recently discontinued its 8-inch Windows tablets in the U.S., noting stronger interest in larger-size models. The company emphasized it wasn't pulling out of the category permanently, so that could indicate a retrenchment. Other manufacturers, including Microsoft, could also be reassessing their options.<br />
<br />
A Surface mini wouldn’t be a single-purpose device, although Neowin approvingly mentions that a Surface mini would be an excellent OneNote machine—and it comes with a stylus, too. Netflix has written a version of its app for Windows RT machines, and web apps would make up for other deficiencies. Still, a small screen, limited memory, and the Windows RT OS would make for a tough sell. And with Microsoft’s recent efforts to trim the fat, it would seem that killing the Surface mini would be one of Microsoft’s easier decisions.<br />

For the low prices, the Fire HD tablets have strong hardware features. The tablets have quad-core processors, and front and rear cameras. The 6-inch screen can display images at 252 pixels-per-inch (ppi), while the 7-inch screen shows images at 216 ppi. Amazon also said the Fire HD tablets provide three times the graphics performance than Samsung’s entry-level Galaxy Tab 4 tablets, which have ARM’s basic Mali graphics.<br /><br />The Fire HD tablets also have Gorilla Glass displays, which reduces the chances of screens cracking or getting scratches. <br />PCs have long supported a feature known as Wake-on-LAN. When Wake-on-LAN is enabled on a PC, the PC’s network interface listens for a specially formed packet, even while the computer is powered off, hibernating, or in sleep mode. When the computer receives the packet, it powers on.<br /><br />You could take advantage of Wake-on-LAN to turn on your PC over the Internet. This would allow you to leave your PC off except when you want to access its desktop or files remotely.<br /><br />This can be done in two separate ways. You could forward the appropriate ports from your home router to the computer running on your local network, and then use a specialized software program to send the “Wake-on-LAN” packet to your home IP address.</div>

TeamViewer (once again) offers this feature, allowing you to send Wake-on-LAN packets to other computers on your local network if one PC with TeamViewer enabled is powered on. Steam’s killer in-home streaming feature allows you to stream games running on your gaming PC to other Windows, Linux, or Mac computers on your home network.
